Difference between base oils , group1 and group2.

The updating of the devices and machines has helped us to witness significant progress in the field of oils and lubricants. In fact, industrial machines and new cars should use newer oils to reduce friction; Oils whose chemical and physical properties were better than group 1 oils. In fact, the machines need  for quality products caused the production and expansion of Group 2 base oils. In this article, we are going to examine the difference between base oils group 1 and group 2.

Difference between base oils like group1 and group2

There are many difference between base oils Group 1 and 2. These differences can be divided into three categories.

The first category is the difference in the properties of oils. Each group of base oils has its own physical and chemical characteristics

The second category of differences is related to their application. The reason for the difference in applications is the difference in physical chemical properties. In the following, first we will express the differences in physical and chemical properties.

Physical and chemical difference between base oils group 1 and 2

Among the physical and chemical properties of oils, sulfur content, saturation level, and viscosity index are among the factors that receive more attention.

Difference in sulfur content

The amount of sulfur in Group 1 base oils is more than 0.03%. For more information click on Group 1 base oils.

While the amount of sulfur in the base oil of group 2 is less than 0.03%.

This factor shows that the group 1 base oil has lower purity than the second group.

The difference in saturation

The higher saturation level of an oil, the less the oil reacts with the environment.

The saturation level of group 1 base oil is less than 90%.

On the other hand, the saturation level of group 2 base oil is more than 90%.

The higher saturation level of the second group shows that the antioxidant properties are higher in group 2 oil. Antioxidant properties prevent oil oxidation.

The difference in viscosity index

In this case, these oils are not much different from each other.

Viscosity index is an index shows How much does the viscosity of a substance change due to temperature changes and heat transfer.

The difference is in the flash point

The flash point is the point at which the oil starts to catch fire upon reaching that temperature.

The flash point of Group 1 oils is between 180 and 220 degrees Celsius.

The flash point of Group 2 oils is between 220 and 250 degrees Celsius.

Difference in pour point

The pour point of an oil is the minimum temperature at which the oil is liquid and  can flow and has not turned into a solid state.

The pour point of group one base oils is from -3 degrees to -9 degrees Celsius.

The pour point of the second group of base oils is between -8 and -25 degrees Celsius.

Difference in viscosity at 100 degrees

At a temperature of 100, the viscosity of these two groups is different.

The viscosity of the first group per 100 in the first group is between 4.4 and 28 cst.

The viscosity of the second group at 100 degrees is between 5 and 10 cst.

The difference between base oils , group 1 and 2 in application

Base oils of group 1 have lower price than group 2 and are currently less useful. Due to being impure and having less antioxidant properties compared to group two, these oils are used in industries that do not require special mechanical and oils with special chemical properties.

Applications of group 1 base oils

1- Lubrication of industrial machines

In a situation where a machine does not work under high pressure and high temperature, this oil can be combined with other lubricants for lubrication. For example, this oil can be used in the lubrication of simple machines and hydraulic systems with low pressure.

2- Use in the production of cutting fluid and machining

Cutting and machining on metal parts creates friction and heat. If this heat is not controlled, it will cause the part to break and damage the machined diamond. To control the heat, they use a fluid to reduce the temperature of the part and avoid creating high friction. Group 1 base oil is one of the raw materials that can be used in this work.

3- Power transmission oils

This oil can be used in hydraulic transmission devices that work with fluid pressure. Of course, this oil cannot transfer a lot of power between arms in hydraulic systems, and it is used in small hydraulic systems.

Applications of group 2 base oils

1- Engine oils

Group 2 base oils are used in the production of high-quality motor oils for passenger and diesel cars due to their high thermal and oxidation stability.

2- Industrial oils

In industrial applications such as machining, lubrication and protection of equipment, these oils are used due to their protective properties and proper lubrication.

3- Hydraulic oils

Group 2 base oils are used in hydraulic systems due to their low pour point and stability at high temperatures. Compared to Group 1 oil, this oil has the ability to transfer more force between joints.

4- Brake oils

In the production of high-performance brake oil, group 2 base oils are used due to their suitable chemical properties.

5- Gear oils

In the production of gear oils and power transmission, these oils are used due to their resistance to pressure and oxidation. In fact, this oil is used for lubrication in systems such as gearboxes and differentials.

Conclusion and last word

The use of group 1 base oils has been significantly reduced and the reason for this is the inappropriate mechanical and physical properties compared to the rest of the groups. Group 2 base oils are currently in use; These oils are more widespread than the third group due to their lower price, and they use the combination of this oil with other materials to lubricate industrial machines.
